Absolutely, the bigger questions are never new, just rediscovered. I’d even say they’ve been discussed for more than thirty years; including stories about golems, and other creatures that become more powerful than their creators. Automatic subtitling is not the example I would have picked to demonstrate the significance of the human experience. I expect subtitling to be “solved” within a few years. Speech recognition accuracy is already very high, and research about automatically identifying other sonic cues is being carried out now. It’s also a situation where we have a large database of material to train on. This is a quantifiable problem that has seen steady progress in research. I’m more interested in the less quantifiable: what does it mean to appreciate the film? How would it look to create something inspired by it?
